Through the growing years, many people have been told that they are blessed to have fluoride added into their water supplies. They were told that the fluoride will help keep their teeth strong, as they consume the water they need on a daily basis.
Unknown to the masses, the fluoride (whether in drinking water, toothpastes, mouthwashes, or other dental care products) can actually do more harm than good.
Fluoride and teeth/bones
For one, fluoride does not exactly help protect and strengthen our teeth; it actually makes our teeth weaker.
Data collated by the World Health Organization found no difference in tooth decay numbers, when countries with fluoridated water supplies were compared with those that did not add fluoride to theirs. Other studies found that, in fact, cities with fluoridated water had higher cavity rates than non fluoridated cities. This result was attributed to a condition known as dental fluorosis, where fluoride actually weakens and eventually damages the tooth enamel.
Fluoride accumulation in bones has also been found to make bones brittle and more susceptible to fractures.
Fluoride and other problems
The problems that fluoride brings do not end here.
Fluoride aggregation in the pineal gland affects the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates the body’s sleep/wake cycle and the onset of puberty. It increases the uptake of aluminum in the brain and lead in the blood, as such increasing heavy metal toxicity in the body.
Fluoride has also been found to affect brain and cognitive development, even bring about brain damage in fetuses. Impairments in learning and memory have also been correlated to fluoride use. Fluoride also affects the immune system, by inhibiting the production of antibodies in the blood, as well as triggering auto-immune attacks on the body.
Fluoride, a known suppressor of the thyroid gland, can bring about hypothyroidism in those with originally healthy glands. Hypothyroidism symptoms include lowered immunity, lowered levels of energy, reduced sex drive, and unexplained increase in weight.
Considering that a person consumes so much water in a day, and uses so much toothpaste over a lifetime, it is frightening to think about the amount of fluoride that has built up in the body over time.
Fluoride and cancer
As if it is not alarming enough, one of the greatest problems with fluoride is its link to cancer.
Studies have found higher cancer rates in cities with fluoridated water than cities without. The higher cancer rates were more pronounced for those above 65 years in age. In a study, it was found that cancer of the bone in young men went as high as 50 percent higher in fluoridated cities than non-fluoridated cities (in another study, the result was six times higher!).
It appears that fluoride, even in low concentrations (such as the amounts used in the water supply) can damage the enzymes involved in DNA repair. And since DNA repair is extremely important in the prevention of cancer, it is no surprise if studies suggest a strong link between fluoride and cancer.
Do something for yourself and your family
To keep yourself from the harms of fluoride as much as possible, use non-fluoridated dental care products. And start filtering your tap water today, using a reverse osmosis filter, both for your drinking and bathing water.
These measures will be especially important if you have young children at home, for otherwise they would be accumulating large amounts of the chemical in their bodies over a lifetime of exposure.
