Turkmenistan's governmental program which allows the country's population to use electricity, gas, water and table salt free of charge has been extended until 2030, President Saparmurat Niyazov said, opening the 17th national forum in Ashgabat on Wednesday.

"I think that this decision will guarantee our people a worry-free life," he said.

The state subsidies came into force in Turkmenistan on September 30, 1992.

The Turkmen economy has been growing at a rapid pace and its industries have sound potential, Niyazov said, adding that it will be possible to double the country's salaries, stipends and social benefits starting from January 1, 2008. A further 50% rise will take place in 2010, the president said.

GDP per capita exceeded $8,300 in 2006, as compared with $20 in the past, he said.

A development program for Turkmenistan's oil and gas sector until 2030 features high on the forum's agenda. Niyazov suggested amending the program to ensure that petrol prices on the domestic market remain unchanged.
