UNESCO ELECTS NEW DIRECTOR GENERAL

Regular session of the Executive Board of UNESCO was held in Paris. More than 60 issues were discussed considered during the event. One of important issues was the choosing of a candidate for the post of Director General of the organization.
UNESCO is the education, science and culture organization of the United Nations. It was founded on November 16, 1945. Headquarters is located in Paris.
The term of the current Director General of UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura from Japan ends in November 2009. He was elected in 1999 and re-elected in 2005.
There are representatives from nine countries in the list of candidates to the post. Candidates from Austria, Algeria, Bulgaria, Egypt, Lithuania, Russia, Tanzania and others are among them. The winner will be proposed on the nomination of the General Conference of UNESCO which will adopt the new Director General of this international organization.
Uzbekistan is a member of UNESCO since October 1993. The mission of the organization operates in Tashkent.
