22 MAY: INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY
First celebrated in 2002, the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) aims at increasing understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. This May 22, IBD will focus on the theme of 'Biodiversity: Life Insurance for our Changing World.'
In a rapidly changing world with growing world population and increasing pressures on the world's natural resources, the year's theme is a reminder of the role of biodiversity in protecting life and aims at creating good conditions to ensure the sustainability of the goods and ecological services upon which life depends.
This year's celebration is particularly important as it coincides with the launch of the Biodiversity Synthesis Report of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. The report, 'Biodiversity and Human Well-being: A Synthesis Report for the Convention on Biological Diversity,' will be available on May 22.
