2 OF 4 PRIORITIES OF KYRGYZSTANS NEWLY ADOPTED CONCEPT OF NATIONAL SECURITY ARE RELATED WITH ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Today the meeting of the Security Council of Kyrgyzstan was held in Bishkek with participation of the KR President, heads of ministries, departments and regions. The agenda for the meeting included two questions - about the Concept of National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic and the state of the environment and measures to ensure the environmental security of the country.

The concept gives a clear understanding of our national interest that we must protect and ensure through our domestic and foreign policy, President Kurmanbek Bakiyev said in his opening remarks and noted that the KR Concept of security was the result of collective efforts of an ad-hoc committee, ministries and departments of the republic.

It is notable that two of the four priority areas of the Concept of National Security of Kyrgyzstan adopted at the meeting of the Security Council, are closely linked to environment and sustainable development issues. These are a section on environmental security and a section on water-energy issues in relation to water deficit.

Kurmanbek Bakiyev named a worsening situation in water and energy area in Central Asia as one of the external threats to Kyrgyzstan. According to the head of state, these issues must be addressed taking into account the interests of all countries in the region. He also believes that construction of Kambarata HPS could help reduce the threat.
