In follow-up to the 1st Asia-Pacific Water Summit in Beppu, Japan in December 2007, Mr. Yoshiro Mori, President of the Asia-Pacific Water Forum announced that Thailand has been selected to host the 2nd Asia-Pacific Water Summit in 2010.
“We believe that with Thailand’s leadership and support, the 2nd Asia-Pacific Water Summit, under the theme of Water Security: Leadership and Commitment, will attract top-level policy and decision-makers from beyond the water sector, such as heads of governments and ministers of finance and planning, as well as leaders from the private sector, local governments, civil society and media in the region”, said Mr. Mori.
In preparation for the Summit, a second version of the Asian Water Development Outlook is expected to be published by the Asian Development Bank and the Asia-Pacific Water Forum. Its guiding vision for water security states that "societies can enjoy water security when they successfully manage their water resources and services to 1) satisfy household water and sanitation needs in all communities; 2) support productive economies in agriculture and industry; 3) develop vibrant, livable cities and towns; 4) restore healthy rivers and ecosystems; and, 5) build resilient communities that can adapt to change."
The Summit will be held for two days in early January 2012 in Bangkok. By approval of the National Water Resources Committee, the Steering Committee for the 2nd APWS will be established. The Steering Committee led by the Deputy Prime Minister, who is also the Chairman of the National Water Resources Committee will set the policy and direction of the 2nd APWS and invite the APWF to jointly work to prepare agenda and invitee’s list.
